See You in Chicago!

ASEA Monthly

The 2019 ACOPA Symposium will be held in Chicago on Aug. 9-10. The 2019 Symposium is the 14th such event, almost all of which have been held in Chicago. (I can think of few cities in this country I’d rather visit in the summer than Chicago!)

The first Symposium was held on Aug. 18-19, 2006; as luck would have it, PPA 2006 was passed shortly before the event, so we had plenty of new material to discuss. Mary Ann Rocco chaired the event, and we will be forever grateful to her for setting the precedent for an outstanding meeting, year in and year out.

The event is referred to as a “symposium” rather than a conference. The reason for this is that the intention was (and is) that the meeting be as much a sharing of ideas as a presentation of subject matter. In keeping with this concept, there are no breakout sessions – all attendees are together in the same room the whole time – and sessions are planned with the presumption that attendees are well versed in most things defined benefit in nature.

This year’s symposium promises to create some lively discussion. Unsure about how the maximum deduction rules of Section 404 interact with the funding rules of Section 430? ACOPA President-Elect Lauren Okum and I will dive deeply into that interplay, with the possibility of some disagreement among those in attendance about certain issues.

Tired of hearing from advisors about the marketing material they received claiming variable annuity plans are better than cash balance plans? Jim Holland and the honorable Kelsey Mayo will reveal the hidden traps in these and other aggressive designs.

Lorraine Dorsa and Mary Ann will tell us all we need to know about terminating PBGC plans. Ever wonder what to do with those plans with no majority owners where the sponsor claims they can’t fully fund? Lorraine will tell us about her experiences with distress and involuntary terminations – a subject I tend to avoid when I present in these sessions!

Still need your ethics credit for this cycle? We’ve got you covered!

And more, of course – on Section 415 (Larry Deutsch and Rick Block) … Section 436 (Larry and Jim) … and updates from Washington, IRS and PBGC. Culminating in a final session where a panel of experts provide for answers to our most pressing questions!
