From the President

ASEA Monthly

As I sit here writing this today, I realize it is 2 years to the day since my last day in the office. Now I can barely think about being in the office. What would my cats do? Who would retrieve all the packages? Then there’s the lunch planning, clothing planning, do I ever want to go back to wearing makeup again? The only thing I know for sure is my cats will continue napping all day. Fortunately, I won’t have to think about any of this in the immediate future. What I do have to think about is all the good stuff going on with ASEA!

Thank You!

I do want to take a moment to thank some of the volunteers who have recently stepped up to fill positions. We have Hui Hui Jiang, who is our ASEA representative on the Third Thursdays Planning Committee. For those who are unaware, this is a monthly virtual event put on by the Women in Retirement Conference (WiRC) and is complimentary to members of all of the ARA sister organizations. The events are 60 to 90 minutes and have a unique vibe and feature industry presentations and attendee interaction. Each Third Thursday experience focuses on one of the four core topic areas: leadership, marketing, practice management or personal growth. They offer an accessible option to a wide range of women in the retirement industry and an opportunity to meet and connect with other professionals on a regular basis. I encourage you all to join in when you can. I have been able to attend a couple events and find them valuable for sure. Thank you Hui Hui for starting your journey of volunteering for ASEA by being on this committee.

I also want to thank Eric Brandon for agreeing to be an ASEA representative on the ASPPA Annual Meeting Planning committee. This is not a small undertaking and your willingness to jump in quickly is greatly appreciated.

Committee News

We are also just starting an EA education committee to start looking at putting together study material and potential courses for individuals preparing for the Enrolled Actuary Exams. Stay tuned for more information as this project begins to take shape. We will be sending out a survey to get input on the type of material and format that would be most beneficial. Please use the link below to show your interest (and put a note in the bottom section of the volunteer form).

I’ve had the privilege of sitting in on a couple meetings of the Professional Events committee. These are the people who plan out the year of webcast offerings, along with the virtual conference and the symposium. They work very well together as a team and are very productive in a short time! Though they are not necessarily “recent” volunteers I do want to thank Lorraine, Kevin, Justin, Ken, Nolan, Ray, and Kelsey.

With regard to the Discipline Committee, we will be publishing the first sample disclosure for ASOP 51 (Assessment and Disclosure of Risk Associated with Measuring Pension Obligations and Determining Pension Plan Contributions) and proposed procedural guidelines for resolving ABCD complaints very soon. The Discipline Committee worked very hard to develop this first sample disclosure and we look forward to more guidance from the Committee.

Join Us!

As I noted in a recent post, we are looking for volunteers to help review the rules and procedures for the ASEA Google Group. This would be a relatively minimal time commitment.

There are many other volunteer opportunities, but here are a few more we’re looking to fill sooner rather than later: Discipline Committee (Professionalism Activities), writers for various publications, someone to review webcasts and conference course offerings for CE credit (Core/Non-Core, etc.), Membership Committee, and more. Please use this volunteer form to indicate your interest (and put a note in the bottom section of the form).

Finally, I hope to see many of you at the live, in-person 2022 ASEA Symposium! This is happening Aug. 5-6 in Chicago. Stay tuned for more details.
