Hello ACOPA –

It’s been 2 months since August’s ACOPA Actuarial Symposium and now the Form 5500 deadline is almost behind us. Next stop is Thanksgiving in this quick-moving year!

After 4 years of writing exam questions for the EA-2L exam, I am excited to start serving as a Co-Chair of that exam committee. Carl Shalit. a consulting actuary in Salem, MA, is the current Chair of the Joint Board’s Advisory Committee on Actuarial Examinations and has penned an article on the enrolled actuary examination writing committee and the opportunities to earn CE credits, which you can find here

The upcoming ASPPA Annual Conference means we say goodbye to John Markley as ACOPA’s President. John says goodbye, looks at the past year and the future in his article here. (Thank you John for all your hard work!)

Many of us are aware of a recent Fidelity paper on increased hardship distributions in 401(k) plans. Ted Godbout, a writer/editor at the American Retirement Association, has provided a well-informed, and perhaps skeptical, article on Fidelity’s study, which you can find here

John Iekel, Senior Writer/Editor at American Retirement Association, writes about the new life expectancy and distribution period tables that have been updated for purposes of the required minimum distribution (RMD) rules. There is also a link to a letter from Brian Graff and Marty Pippins to the Treasury Benefits Tax Counsel on this matter. You can find John’s summary here

Finally, here is the highlight of my summer. Rock legend Geddy Lee of Rush wrote a book titled, The Big Beautiful Book of Bass. He spoke, had a Q&A period, and then signed copies of his book. In the few moments I had with Geddy, I let him know that my family, like his parents, were also Holocaust survivors. Geddy asked my family name (Schmuchovitz, not Stone) and gave me a ‘Right On!’ and the fist bump you see below.

Rock on, ACOPA!
