Do you or a client have participants who have not claimed their pension funds? The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) in its Fall 2015 Retirement Recap newsletter features information on what to do about unclaimed pensions.
Information is available from the PBGC about unclaimed pensions through the following means:
- by phone at 1-800-326-LOST (5678);
- by emailing the PBGC at [email protected];
- if writing for information about people whose names were found, send correspondence to:
Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation
P.O. Box 151750
Alexandria, VA 22315-9923; and
- if writing for information about people whose names were not found or it was not possible to find the company that sponsored the plan, send correspondence to:
PBGC Pension Search Program
1200 K Street, NW, Suite 930
Washington, DC 20005-4026
- Checking through the PBGC website to see of the PBGC insures a plan that an unclaimed pension is part of is another helpful way to find information about unclaimed pensions, the PBGC notes.
- In addition, it is possible to find out from the PBGC if it has taken over a particular pension plan, and may therefore have information about that plan.
- The PBGC also makes available summary plan descriptions (SPDs) filed from 1975 to 1991.
