ASEA Webcast: Trust Isn’t Enough: Avoiding Plan Valuation Mistakes – and Avoiding a Crisis If They Do Occur

Available until March 19, 2025

Speakers:
Cy Smith, Partner, Zuckerman Spaeder
Sara Lawson, Partner, Zuckerman Spaeder

Description: Actuarial assumptions come with potentially dramatic consequences for benefit plans, making it essential that plan sponsors and their actuaries have a relationship that is built on more than just trust. What questions should plan sponsors ask? How should actuarial reporting be structured? What guardrails should be in place to help avoid mistakes? Two litigators who have led high-stakes benefit cases and recently took an actuarial malpractice case to a jury trial will answer these questions, provide concrete steps for protecting against valuation mistakes, and offer guidance for identifying and addressing problems before they turn into a crisis.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Attendees will come away with concrete actions they can implement to prevent costly benefit plan valuation mistakes
  2. They will be better able to identify signals that there may be problems with a plan’s valuation
  3. They will be prepared to act if mistakes are discovered – both to prevent damage to the plan and to consider legal action
