Education and Career Development
ASPPA is always providing information and insights that will be valuable to its members! Following is a summary of upcoming webcasts.

Live Webcasts

2:00–2:50 p.m. ET

Speaker: Kelsey Mayo, J.D., Poyner Spruill LLP; W. Frank Porter, APA, QKA, QPA, Empower Retirement

Description: The Department of Labor (DOL) issued final rules in April 2020 to modernize and streamline communication from plan sponsors to participants using electronic options such as e-mail and the internet. This bold move is a major jump from the 2002 regulations, when most people were just beginning the use of electronic means of communication.

This insightful webcast will explain the final rules (including how they differed from the 2019 proposal), how they mesh with the 2002 safe harbors, and how your plan sponsors can utilize the final rules to provide certain ERISA-required notices. We will hear both from a legal perspective as well as a recordkeeping perspective on how to implement the DOL’s streamlined electronic methods of communication.

This webcast will help you understand the requirements you need in order to meet the safe harbor, and successful practices for communicating the retirement plans benefits to employees.

2:00–2:50 p.m. ET

Speaker: Kizzy Gaul, Prudential Retirement

Description: This webcast will provide a practical overview of the issues encountered in the preparation of Form 5500 and strategies for resolving them. We will cover common triggers that may generate attention from IRS and DOL and how to effectively support your clients in responding. It also will preview notable impacts of the new Employee Benefit Audit Standard (Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) No. 136) on audits and Form 5500 preparation.

2:00–2:50 p.m. ET

Speaker: Richard Hochman, Director, Retirement Plan Consulting Services, Actuarial Systems Co.

Description: Defined contribution plans are about to be restated, but under Cycle 3 the rules have changed dramatically. There are no more prototype or volume submitter plans, just pre-approved. One problem with this is that these new plans do not reflect the most recent legislation and will require amendments to properly address. The IRS is limiting language that is in current documents that may affect both plan design and future operation. We have just finished restating defined benefit plans under the Pension Protection Act of 2006, but document vendors are about to redraft for Cycle 3 and will be reflecting both the SECURE and CARES Acts.
