CalSavers Registration Deadline for Large Employers Looms

Government Affairs

The deadline by which large employers in California are to register with CalSavers—the state-sponsored retirement plan for employees whose employers do not offer a plan—is fast approaching.

Employers in the Golden State with 100 or more employees have until Sept. 30 to register. The original deadline had been June 30, 2020, but on April 15 the California Secure Choice Retirement Savings Investment Board decided to extend the deadline for those employers because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

California State Treasurer Fiona Ma in a press release encouraged employers to register, remarking, “With CalSavers, businesses have an important but easy role to play in helping their workers get onto a path to retirement security. Registration is quick and there are no fees for employers.”

The board’s extension of the registration deadline for employers with more than 100 employees does not change other deadlines for 2021 or 2022. Employers with more than 50 employees have until June 30, 2021 to register, and employers with at least five employees have until June 30, 2022 to do so.
