ASEA Monthly

Hello ASEA—

Hope you are all enjoying the nicer weather, loosening of restrictions and the new look of MyPAA. All result in more fun in our lives! I have enjoyed the post-April work slowdown and finally taking some time off here and there. Enjoy your summer vacations as September and October loom.

Speaking of fun, I often search though retirement blogs for potential writers for the ASEA Monthly. David J. Kupstas, FSA, EA, MSEA, Chief Actuary of the ACG Retirement Plan Design and Administration Division, is always at the top of my list for well written and informative articles. Here he discusses Roth IRAs in an article that will be good for the DB folks who don’t deal much with the DC world. You can find David’s article here.

Like a superhero movie that plays in the theatres but is available for streaming for a limited time, this next article has an interesting origin story and a limited shelf life.

Melanie Aska Knox’s article on qualified replacement articles was discussed on the ASEA Google Group. I reached out to Melanie to see if we could reprint her article in the ASEA Monthly and she pointed out that the article was originally printed in a Wolters Kluwer journal, the Journal of Pension Benefits. As such. we needed to get their permission to reprint it. Given the age of the content and limited number of pages, Wolters Kluwer was kind enough to allow us to use the article without a fee if we limit its time online to 6 months. So read it, love it and live it, as this article will not be here forever. You can find it here.

Next up, Raymond D. Berry, MSPA, ASA, EA, MAAA, Consulting Actuary, brings us up to date on the next couple of ASEA conferences. You can find the dates, topics and more in Ray’s post, which you can find here.

And lastly, John Ortman, ARA’s Editorial Director, shares his article on the anniversary of a great ASPPA victory (as seen in the Spring 2021 issue of Plan Consultant magazine). I think our more ‘seasoned’ members will enjoy the references to Chet Salkind, Fred Reish and Bruce Ashton. You can find John’s article here.

ASEA folks… I really miss you all and look forward to seeing you at in-person meetings. Be good and be healthy until then. — Alan
