ARA Requests Hurricane Florence Relief

The American Retirement Association has formally requested relief for taxpayers and service providers adversely affected by Hurricane Florence.

Specifically, the letter requests:

Relief for taxpayers who would like to use their retirement assets in qualified retirement plans to alleviate hardships caused by Hurricane Florence, patterned on the relief announced after Hurricane Sandy as set forth in IRS Announcement 2012-44

In view of the timing (the pending deadline for calendar year plans that received an extension to file Form 5500 until October 15, 2018), relief is also requested patterned on past announcements such as that provided for Hurricane Sandy. “It is particularly important that relief extend to taxpayers whose books, records or Form 5500 return preparer are located in areas affected by Hurricane Florence,” the letter states.

A copy of the letter is available here.

ARA thanks the IRS for the opportunity to provide input on these matters and the partial relief already provided in IRS SC Notice 2018-01.
