Bill Would Set Up Auto Enrollment for Maryland State Employees

Legislation

A bill is before the Maryland House of Delegates that would require the State Board of Trustees of the Maryland Teachers and State Employees Supplemental Retirement Plans to implement an automatic enrollment arrangement for state employees hired on or after Jan. 1, 2024

Del. Tony Bridges (D-Baltimore) introduced HB0296 on Jan. 25, 2023.

The bill also would require an eligible employer to deduct wages of an employee, to be contributed to a supplemental retirement plan, unless the employee has elected to withdraw from, or cease to contribute to, the supplemental retirement plan.

The bill provides that if it is enacted, it will go into effect Oct. 1, 2023

The bill was referred to the House of Delegates Appropriations Committee.
