ASPPA Connect Returns Sept. 9

Inside ASPPA
Labor Day, the annual national tribute to the contributions workers have made to our country, is observed in the United States on the first Monday in September. ASPPA Connect will not appear on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7; to note the event, here are some facts concerning it. ASPPA Connect will resume publication on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

  • On Sept. 5, 1882, More than 10,000 union workers took unpaid time off work to march in the parade New York’s Central Labor Union held to celebrate union work and show support for all unions. They marched from New York City Hall to 42nd Street.
  • Oregon was the first state to recognize Labor Day, and made it a state legal holiday on Feb. 21, 1887. Later that year, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York followed suit.
  • President Grover Cleveland on June 28, 1894 signed legislation making Labor Day a national holiday.
  • There are other holidays within the Labor Day weekend. The Saturday before Labor Day is International Bacon Day, and some religious groups observe Labor Sunday on the Sunday before Labor Day, a day first organized by the American Federation of Labor in 1909 to encourage reflection on the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.
