ASPPA Connect Returns on July 6

Inside ASPPA
ASPPA Connect will not be appearing on Friday, July 3, as our offices will be closed on that day in observance of Independence Day; however, it will be back to business as usual on Monday, July 6. Here are some facts related to July 4.

The youngest of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was Thomas Lynch, Jr. of South Carolina, who was 27 years old; the oldest was Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, who was 70. The signers’ average age was 45.

Independence Day celebrations in our earliest days as an independent republic include:

  • The first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence was the Pennsylvania Evening Post on July 6, 1776.
  • Philadelphia held the first 4th of July fireworks in 1777.
  • U.S. troops were given a double ration of rum on July 4, 1778 in celebration of Independence Day.
  • Independence Day fell on a Sunday in 1779, so it was celebrated on July 5.
  • The first White House Fourth of July party was held in 1804.
So far, just one president was born on July 4: Calvin Coolidge in 1872.

The names of 59 places in the United States have “liberty” in the name. Pennsylvania is the state with the most, 11. Four of the 59 are counties: Liberty County, FL, Liberty County, GA, Liberty County, MT and Liberty County, TX.
