Cash balance pension plans are often the plan design of choice for new plans. While desirable, there are many intricacies that need to be addressed. This session will cover the interplay of the interest crediting rate with funding, funding restrictions, and minimum participation; advantages and disadvantages of using actual return as the interest crediting rate; partnership issues with cost-sharing illustrations; combined plan nondiscrimination testing; and application of 415 limits. The speakers will also address the latest guidance and areas where guidance is still needed.

The webcast is designed to offer registrants 2 ERPA CE credits. The final decision as to the number of ERPA credits rests solely with the Internal Revenue Service.

Continuing Education Changes for RECORDED Webcast Attendees

Once registered, attendees will receive a confirmation letter directing them to the “Access Recorded Webcasts” page with a link to the WebEx OnDemand Center. Each registered viewer will be tracked when they log in with their name and email address. The webcast link will expire once the attendee has satisfied the CE requirement. CE credits will be applied to their record on a periodic basis and a certificate of attendance will be available on each attendee's My ASPPA page.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Kevin Donovan, CPA, EA, MSPA

Kevin is a nationally recognized speaker and author in the area of qualified retirement plans. Kevin is a shareholder in the CPA firm of Beach Fleischman & Co., PC, and is managing member of the firm's pension affiliate, Pinnacle Plan Design, LLC, where he specializes in designing retirement plans to maximize the benefits for business owners and principals. Kevin is an enrolled actuary as well as a Certified Public Accountant. He is a Member of ASPPA, where he has served on the Board of Directors and the Government Affairs Committee (GAC). Kevin is a founding Member of the College of Pension Actuaries (COPA) and currently serves as ACOPA's Vice President. He also serves on ACOPA's GAC where he has assisted in writing comment letters to the IRS and Treasury regarding proposed regulations. Kevin has been a contributing editor to Journal of Pension Benefits (JPB), the leading trade publication for pension professionals, where he previously authored a column concerning retirement plan design for small businesses. He is currently an editorial advisor for the JPB. Kevin has also been published in the Journal of Taxation of Employee Benefits, the Benefit Law Journal, as well as The ASPPA Journal. In addition, Kevin is a contributing author to the Life Insurance Answer Book for Qualified Plans and Estate Planning. Most recently Kevin was a contributing author to the AICPA publication The CPA's Guide to Retirement Plans for Small Businesses in which he authored chapters on defined benefit plans and tax deduction issues regarding retirement plans. Kevin graduated from Syracuse University with a BS in Accounting in May of 1980. He has practiced in the retirement plan area for more than 25 years.

Lauren Okum, ASA, EA, MAAA, MSPA

Lauren is the owner of Premier Actuarial Solutions. She has more than 19 years of experience in the actuarial profession. In the first 10 years of her career, Lauren worked with clients in the large plan market at Mercer Human Resource Consulting, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Hewitt Associates. In January 2004, she transitioned into the smaller plan market at RSM McGladrey Retirement Resources. As the director of actuarial consulting, she was the lead consultant on her clients and set the quality control standards for the practice. Lauren was also the director of actuarial services for Pension Specialists, Inc., where she led the defined benefit practice from all aspects. Lauren is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries, an Enrolled Actuary, a Member of the Academy of Actuaries, and a Member of the Society of Pension Actuaries. She graduated summa cum laude with highest distinction in Actuarial Science from the University of Illinois and Urbana-Champaign and attended Harvard Business School for her MBA.

Steve has been recognized by both the local and national media for his expertise. He has appeared on CNBC, WBZ television, Fox Business television, U.S. News and World Report, Kiplinger, Investment News and other publications.
