Both Congress and IRS have embarked on a mission to increase oversight of paid Federal tax return preparers (preparers). The new rules, which are effective in 2011, are primarily aimed at Form 1040 preparers. However they also apply to individuals and firms that prepare Form 5500’s (and other related schedules and forms). This initiative represents the first concerted effort by the IRS to require registration for all preparers, as well as instituting competency testing and continuing education requirements for those preparers who are not “enrolled” (i.e. preparers who are not Circular 230 professionals, such as ERPA’s, Enrolled Actuaries, CPAs etc.). Learn how these new rules may dramatically affect you and your business and what you can do now to lessen their impact.

The final decision as to the number and type of JBEA credits rests solely with the Joint Board for the Enrollment of Actuaries.
