Position Summary

Acting in an expert advisory role, this position provides input and support to the Chair of ASPPA’s Publications Subcommittee, Technical Education Consultants (TECs) and other designated ASPPA staff. The Publications Subcommittee member is responsible for reviewing E&E publications to ensure that the publications are accurate and well-presented. Publications Subcommittee members edit, proof, recommend changes and participate in discussion of the depth and breadth of topic coverage in publications designed for ASPPA exams and credential programs. A Publications Subcommittee member should anticipate a minimum two year commitment to this effort. The most intensive period of work will take place in the summer and fall months.

Essential Functions

With regard to assigned publications, the Publications Subcommittee member:

  • Reviews assigned publications and suggests changes and corrections primarily of grammatical and typographical nature. While industry knowledge is needed to evaluate the material, the primary focus is on finalizing the author’s text and ensuring that all errors are noted and corrected.
  • Assists Technical Education Consultants (TEC) in gathering article reprint permission requests from original authors and publishers for various publications.
  • Participates in conference calls with E&E staff and other volunteers on an as-needed basis.
  • Responds to inquiries from E&E staff and other volunteers on an as-needed basis.
  • Meets strict turnaround schedules, many of which will be no more than one week.
  • Participates in other E&E functions as needed.

Qualifications/Skills and Knowledge Requirements

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word
  • Excellent editing and proofing skills to review written text and final publication proofs in preparation for final printing process.
  • Current ASPPA member; up-to-date on all continuing education requirements for any ASPPA designations held by the individual.
  • Minimum five (5) years technical retirement plan experience.
  • Must demonstrate in-depth technical expertise and a thorough understanding of the practical application of relevant law and formal/informal guidance.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. Position continually requires demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Work requires continual attention to detail and the ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to work in a shifting environment with ability to juggle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands and to seek supervisory assistance as appropriate.
  • Ability to make minimum two year commitment to position.

Performance Measures

On an annual basis, members of the Publications Subcommittee will be evaluated by the Publications Subcommittee Chair:

  • Quality and timeliness of assigned projects.
  • Demonstration of expertise and ongoing commitment to enhance current knowledge.
  • Responsiveness to E&E staff and other volunteers.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in responding to transition issues and evolution of E&E.

Supplemental Information

An E&E Publications Subcommittee member will be responsible for no more than two (2) designated publications. Committee members will not be permitted to take ASPPA exams during their tenure as their work may include coverage of topics and texts directly related to exam development. Members can earn up to 15 ASPPA CE credits per year.
