ASPPA, IRS, AND WP&BC TO HOST FIRST MOUNTAIN STATES EMPLOYEE BENEFITS CONFERENCE

August 13, 2003 - (Arlington, Va.) – ASPPA, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and the Western Pension & Benefits Conference (WP&BC) have teamed up to present the first annual 2003 Mountain States Benefits Conference in Denver, CO, on September 11-12, 2003. The Conference features interactive panel discussions on the latest employee benefits issues with local, regional, and national government and private sector experts. Designed for all pension professionals, the program will focus on exchanging information and educating attendees on current regulatory, legislative, administrative, and actuarial topics.

According to Sal L. Tripodi, APM, co-chair of the Mountain States Benefits Conference, “What makes the conference particularly valuable is that it draws more government speakers than any other event in the area. Attendees are able to interact directly with the people responsible for forming, implementing, and enforcing government policy.” The Conference is also an excellent opportunity to network with other practitioners, plan sponsors, and plan administrators, and browse tabletop exhibits displaying the latest technologies and services in the industry.

Conference sessions with IRS, DOL, PBGC, and private sector experts will educate attendees on the following: Fiduciary Duties and Prohibited Transactions in a Post-Enron World; Defined Benefit Plan Issues; Preparing Retirees for the Cost of Medical Coverage; The Service Provider vs. The Plan Sponsor: Who Does What and Why; A Practical Approach to Plan Issues in Mergers and Acquisitions; Recent 401(k) Guidance; HIPAA Security Regulations; Aggressive and Questionable Practices; Fiduciary Compliance Audits and Review; Health Reimbursement Arrangements; Plan Document Updates; Current State of the PBGC; Health Care Cost Containment; 403(b) and 457 Plans; and Voluntary Compliance.

All employee benefits professionals are encouraged to attend including accountants; actuaries; attorneys; benefits directors; consultants; human resource personnel; investment professionals; plan administrators; practitioners; trust officers; and others. The conference offers core and noncore JBEA (Joint Board for the Enrollment of Actuaries) credit and 15 hours of ASPPA continuing education credit. CE credit is also available for attorneys, insurance professionals and CPAs upon request.

The Conference is jointly sponsored by ASPPA, the Employee Plans, Tax Exempt/Government Entities Division of the Internal Revenue Service, and the Western Pension & Benefits Conference.
