Actuarial Issues Committee

The Actuarial Issues Committee (AIC) is the main body for coordinating ASPPA’s non-legislative and non-regulatory actuarial activity. Committee members act as liaisons to other ASPPA committees and subcommittees to enhance the actuarial content of ASPPA’s current programs and to provide an actuarial perspective to ASPPA’s future planning. The AIC provides a central location for actuaries to voice their concerns and grievances. Additionally, the AIC reviews standards or guidance issued by the other professional or governmental organizations that impact pensions in the United States. Finally, the AIC oversees the activities of the various intersocietal committees in which ASPPA has representation.

To accomplish these aims, the Foundation provides endowments to educational institutions for the granting of scholarships to qualified students majoring in Actuarial Science who are seeking assistance with tuition and expenses. It also sponsors the development of educational materials and texts as well as research by making grants of funds for approved projects.

Conferences Committee

The ASPPA Strategic Plan and Mission Statement identifies education as one of ASPPA’s most important components. ASPPA Conferences provide continuing education to our members and to the industry as a whole. As a result of the growing number of benefits conferences being offered by multiple organizations including ASPPA, there is a great deal of competition for attendees. ASPPA currently conducts a wide variety of conferences each year including seven small conferences and three large ones: fi ve in conjunction with the IRS, one with the DOL, The ASPPA 401(k) SUMMIT, the ASPPA Annual Conference, the Advanced Actuarial Conference and one jointly in partnership with WP&BC called the Western Benefi ts Conference. This variety seems to meet the needs of our diversifying membership. ASPPA volunteers work in conjunction with staff to produce a valuable program for each conference, as well as perform the practical, handson logistics required for a successful conference. Each conference focuses on the most important retirement plan topics at that time. In 2008, the Conferences Committee will address the generation gap with respect to the delivery of the education provided at conferences, including the X, Y and Millennial generations and the Boomer generation with the prospect of adding a fourth large conference to address the relevant plan distribution side of our industry. ASPPA is introducing a new Women Business Leaders Forum in 2008.

Education and Examination Committee

The Education and Examination (E&E) Committee is responsible for delivering one of the most essential purposes of ASPPA: To provide professional education opportunities for all retirement plan professionals. Education programs are designed to of er learning opportunities for the professional who is new to the industry as well as for the experienced practitioner seeking to obtain new knowledge or wanting to update their comprehension of particular topics. Included as an important component of the E&E program is the development and delivery of the required courses of study for professionals seeking ASPPA’s QPFC, QKA, QPA, CPC, MSPA and FSPA credentials.

E&E constantly updates its education program to reflect changes in the rules, regulations, and practices in the retirement plan profession. For each course of study offered, E&E annually reviews and identifies key topics, learning objectives and syllabi as well as the textbooks and other reading materials to support the educational goals.

The Committee also develops education courses designed to assist candidates in their comprehension of specific topics. Included in its course listings are EA courses offered in preparation for obtaining the Joint Board for the Enrollment Actuaries (JBEA) Enrolled Actuary (EA) credential. EA exams are co-sponsored by ASPPA, the Society of Actuaries and JBEA.
