From the President
I would like to wish a Happy New Year to all ACOPA members!!!
ACOPA provides many benefits to its members. The listserv allows for sharing of ideas in a very collegial environment. Our conferences and webcasts provide the continuing education requirements sought by our members. In addition, ACOPA strives to ensure that the perspective of the small plan pension actuary is represented throughout the actuarial community.
However, a very significant benefit of ACOPA membership is the lobbying support provided by the ACOPA and ARA Government Affairs committee and staff. The 2016 elections resulted in a political environment that was favorable to tax reform. As tax reform plans were being developed, there was the potential for a significant threat to the practices of most ACOPA members. However, Brian Graff and the Government Affairs staff have maintained relationships with key congressional members and staffers. These relationships and the support provided by the ACOPA and other ARA GAC committees led to lobbying efforts that succeeded in removing most of the proposed provisions of the bill that would have been harmful to the retirement system and our practices.
There was no other organization fighting to protect the interests of the pension actuary, most specifically the small plan actuary, other than ACOPA. The pass-through issue alone could have substantially impacted the viability of the cash balance plans of our professional clients and led to an appreciable decline in our practices.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Brian Graff, the ARA Government Affairs staff and the ACOPA Government Affairs Committee for their tireless efforts in fighting to make sure tax reform did not use the retirement system to pay for tax cuts provided by the bill passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump.
