ASPPA Mourns Pat Byrnes

The ASPPA family is saddened to announce that longtime leader G. Patrick Byrnes passed away on Oct. 30, 2017.

Byrnes had an important and lasting impact on not only ASPPA and ACOPA, but also on the entire private-sector retirement industry. “Pat was a great leader in our industry. He will be sorely missed,” said ASPPA Executive Director Brian Graff.

Byrnes, a former Marine, served as ASPPA President in 1991, was a co-founder of the Los Angeles Benefits Conference, drafted ASPPA’s Code of Professional Conduct and helped merge the College of Pension Actuaries (COPA) into ASPPA. One of Byrnes’ biggest accomplishments was to develop a working agreement resulting in improved communication and relations between the IRS and our industry, a solid relationship that continues today. He also served on the ASPPA History Book Task Force.

He received the Harry T. Eidson Founders Award, the Commissioner’s Award from the IRS, and the Director’s Award from the IRS Los Angeles District.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 9:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery & Mortuary, 5835 West Slauson Ave., Culver City, CA 90230.
