Form 5500 Filing Date Approaching

July is here. Obvious, but important for DB plans, DC plans and 403(b) annuity arrangements with calendar year plan years to keep that in mind, since that means the July 31 Form 5500 filing deadline for the 2016 plan year is not far off.

The form must be filed by the end of the seventh month after the end of a plan year. Plans that use the federal fiscal year — Oct. 1-Sept. 30 — have to file by April 30. But since most plans set their plan years to the calendar year, most plans have to file by July 31. So calendar-year plans must file the 2016 Form 5500 by July 31, 2017.

Remember that the IRS decided that filers should not answer compliance questions to Forms 5500, 5500-SF and 5500-EZ, as well as Schedules H, I and R, for the 2016 plan year. This change was among the recommendations that the American Retirement Association (ARA) made to the IRS earlier this year.
