From the Leadership Council

First, as I mentioned in the last newsletter, our Membership Committee is organizing a membership drive at the Enrolled Actuaries Meeting, April 2-5, 2017. There will be a similar drive at annual Western Benefits Conference, July 9-12, 2017, in Anaheim, CA. Anyone who is attending the Enrolled Actuaries Meeting is encouraged to contact Richard Kutikoff or Judy Miller so that they can play a part, lesser or greater, in our efforts. Richard will soon be posting a notice on the listserv regarding this. I am told there will be buttons provided. I suggested “ACOPA – Making Pensions Great Again” but was voted down. You will have to go to the EA Meeting to find out what’s on the button.

Second, watching in the news the efforts to repeal and replace the ACA and enact tax reform hasn’t been so much like watching the making of sausages but, rather, the making of Spam. There was a time where a fried Spam sandwich was delicious, but now, just as with ACA and tax reform, I think I’d rather watch soccer or “Bowling for Furniture.” The acting in soccer is certainly much better than in politics.

Third, for the first year since … I don’t know when … ACOPA had no official representation on the Board of the Academy of Actuaries. Thus the January board meeting was devoid of any conflict of interest. Nevertheless, we are still conflicting our interests through friendly and reasoned discussions with Academy leadership on the 99% of the issues on which we agree and will, in a manner both friendly and reasonable, discuss the interests of the profession at the NAAC meeting in May.

Fourth, due to losing the lottery in December 2015, I am currently serving as the chair of the Joint Discipline Council (JDC). This month my work consisted of signing the application for E&O insurance for the JDC.

Finally, thanks again to all of the ACOPA volunteers who are working on ACOPA committees and projects and on our members’ behalf with other organizations such as the American Academy of Actuaries, the Joint Board for the Enrollment of Actuaries, our sister organization ASPPA, and elsewhere.
