President Trump’s nominees for Labor Secretary and SEC Chairman finally have hearing dates.
The Senate Health Education Labor & Pensions Committee has announced that there will be a full committee hearing on the nomination of Alex Acosta to serve as Secretary of Labor on March 15 at 1:30 p.m. ET.
Acosta, who currently serves as the dean of the Florida International University Law School, was tapped by Trump at a Feb. 16 press conference after Andrew Puzder withdrew his name from consideration for the top job at the Department of Labor.
Acosta, 48, who has been making the rounds on Capitol Hill, looks to be a relatively easy confirmation. The son of Cuban immigrants, he received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard and a law degree from Harvard Law School. Acosta practiced law at the firm of Kirkland & Ellis — and he has been approved for other roles by the Senate three times previously — as a member of the NRLB (2002-2003), as the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights (2003-2005), and the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida (2005-2009).

Hearing on Clayton as SEC Chair
The Senate Banking Committee will hold a hearing March 23 to consider President Trump’s nomination of Wall Street attorney Jay Clayton as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. While he is widely expected to be confirmed, Clayton is likely to face opposition from Democrats on the committee, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH), the ranking Democrat on the panel.
