PBGC Provides Info on Obtaining a Pension Benefit Estimate

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) has issued information on how to obtain a pension benefit estimate from the agency. If one plans to start drawing a PBGC benefit within the next four months, one must ask for an estimate of the benefit amount before applying for the pension. The PBGC also will provide estimates to those who are not ready to retire yet.

To calculate the estimate, the PBGC needs to know:

  • Social Security number;

  • pension plan name and case number (found in the upper left of letters the PBGC has sent);

  • date planned for the start of drawing the benefit;

  • information about spouse, if married; and

  • information about any other person who will be getting part of the pension benefit.

How to Request an Estimate

Through MyPBA. Use MyPBA, our secure online service, to ask the PBGC to send you a benefit estimate.

By Phone. Call 1-800-400-7242 and provide Social Security number, pension plan name and case number.

What PBGC Will Send by Mail

The PBGC will send a pension benefit estimate within 15 to 45 days of a request. It will state the amount that can be expected on the desired start date. The PBGC also will say how much will be received under each annuity option (form of benefit) available.
