- The Roman calendar was changed each time a new emperor took charge. The Roman Senate eventually dictated that Jan. 1 would be the start of the new year. The start of a new year later changed again to different dates, but Pope Gregory XIII reestablished Jan. 1 as New Year’s Day in 1582.
- One-quarter of all champagne bottles sold in the United States in a year are sold between Christmas and New Years Day.
- A bottle of champagne has approximately 49 million bubbles in it.
- The ball drop in New York City’s Times Square attracts a million spectators yearly.
- The ball dropped at Times Square is made of 2,668 Waterford crystals, weighs 11,875 lbs. and is 12 feet in diameter.
- The first time the ball was dropped in NYC was 1907.
