Following are some facts about New Years that we hope you’ll find interesting.

  • Making New Year’s resolutions is not a recent phenomenon — even the ancient Babylonians made them!
  • The Roman calendar was changed each time a new emperor took charge. The Roman Senate eventually dictated that Jan. 1 would be the start of the new year. The start of a new year later changed again to different dates, but Pope Gregory XIII reestablished Jan. 1 as New Year’s Day in 1582.
  • One-quarter of all champagne bottles sold in the United States in a year are sold between Christmas and New Years Day.
  • A bottle of champagne has approximately 49 million bubbles in it.
  • The ball drop in New York City’s Times Square attracts a million spectators yearly.
  • The ball dropped at Times Square is made of 2,668 Waterford crystals, weighs 11,875 lbs. and is 12 feet in diameter.
  • The first time the ball was dropped in NYC was 1907.
  • Atlanta has a Peach Drop to mark the start of the New Year; Nashville has a Music Note Drop; Dillsburg, Pa., has a Pickle Drop.
  • The first Tournament of Roses Parade was held in Pasadena, Calif. in 1890.

  • New Year’s Eve is traditionally the busiest day of the year at Walt Disney World and Disneyland, which stay open late and supplement their usual nightly fireworks show at midnight.
  • On New Year's Eve, about 75% of American parties have 20 or fewer guests.
