Ethics in the Digital Age

While the World Wide Web is now nearly 20 years old, the globe-spanning, the virtual reality of our digital age continues to offer unprecedented opportunities to learn, connect, educate and advertise.

For professionals, this digital age also presents a multitude of ethical pitfalls and challenges with which previous generations never had to contend. Issues can arise around:

  • confidentiality of client information
  • timeliness and sufficiency of communications
  • ownership and dissemination of intellectual property
  • validity of contract provisions,
  • online marketing
  • self-promotion
  • reputational risk
  • record keeping
  • staff management
  • responding to competition from around the globe

Much of what happens online today is unregulated, making it difficult to know how to practice professionally in the fluid, and sometimes volatile, virtual world.

Fortunately for ASPPA members, ASPPA’s new Code of Professional Conduct provides reliable guidance on how to bring a high level of professionalism to practice in the digital age. At the 2014 ASPPA Annual Conference next month, we’ll examine how ASPPA’s new Code applies, clarifying the ethical obligations of employee benefits professionals to your clients, your colleagues and the public at large in this new virtual reality. You’ll come away better prepared to meet the challenges of practice in the digital age with integrity and confidence.
