Credential Overview


TGPC is a new credential offered by ASPPA to educate professionals who specialize in the 403(b) and/or 457 marketplace as well as other plans maintained by tax-exempt and governmental entities. ASPPA also offers a certificate program, the Tax-Exempt & Governmental Plan Administration Certificate which is earned after successful completion of the Tax-Exempt & Governmental Plan Administration (TGPC-1) examination. Examination Requirements

Earning ASPPA’s TGPC credential requires successful completion of the following examinations:

Additional Requirements

In addition to passing the required examination series, a candidate must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Two letters of reference demonstrating at least three years of experience in connection with tax-exempt and/or governmental plans; or
  • Series 6, 7 or 65 license issued by the FINRA (formerly NASD) and two letters of reference demonstrating at least two years of retirement plan related experience; or
  • State-life or annuity insurance license and two letters of reference demonstrating at least two years of retirement plan related experience; or
  • Investment Advisor Representative or Registered Investment Advisor credential and two letters of reference demonstrating at least two years of retirement plan related experience.

TGPC Summary

Average Cost to Obtain:  $1500 

Experience: Average of 2-3 years

Hours of Study Time: 80-200 hours



Transition Rules for Candidates who have the MCRS and CRS designation

Existing NTSAA designated members in good standing will be grandfathered upon joining ASPPA as follows:

  • Those with the MCRS designation will be awarded the TGPC credential. MCRS will need to complete ASPPA's credentialed membership application (available on the ASPPA Membership page) and apply for the TGPC credential (you will be notified when credential is awarded).
  • Those with the CRS designation will be given credit for the RPF-1, RPF-2 and TGPC-1 exams for purposes of obtaining the TGPC credential, but will need to take TGPC-2. Upon successful completion of the TGPC-2 examination, a CRS will need to complete ASPPA's credentialed membership application (available on the ASPPA Membership page) and apply for the TGPC credential (you will be notified when credential is awarded).

Apply for Credential

Applying for ASPPA credentialed membership requires submission of the appropriate form and two letters of recommendation reference that verifies the necessary work experience requirement.

Credential Continuing Education Requirements

All credentialed members must acquire 40 hours of Continuing Education (CE) credits in a two-year-cycle as well as renew your ASPPA Membership annually to retain credentials. For more information please click here.
