ASPPA 2011/2012 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Requirements

Executive Summary

On April 17, 2010, the ASPPA Board of Directors reviewed ASPPA’s Continuing Professional Education (CPE) policy and recommendations for change to ensure we meet our educational and organizational goals in a way that is comparable with other professional associations for the 2011/2012 reporting cycle and beyond.

Since CPE requirements affect all credentialed members, the Education and Examination CPE Policy Subcommittee that presented the recommendations for consideration included representatives from all ASPPA member categories.

The Subcommittee gathered data from more than 20 similar professional associations and concluded that ASPPA’s Code of Professional Conduct and current CPE policy is comprehensive and similar to many other associations. The majority of current CPE policy requires verification for attendance, but expanding requirements to continue to meet our members’ professional goals in some areas was deemed to be warranted.

All continuing education that promotes your professional development will qualify for ASPPA CPE. Starting with 2011/2012 reporting cycle there will be 40 CPE credits required, with 2 of those CPE credits in Ethics/Professionalism topics. Important Note: The Ethics/Professionalism requirement for the 2009/2010 reporting cycle is 1 CPE in Ethics/Professionalism required out of 40 CPE credits.

Proposed Changes

The Board plans to adopt the following CPE policy changes to be made effective 1/1/11:

  1. Verification for meeting/conference attendance will be required per individual session (as JBEA and ERPA requires now)
  2. CPE for Web-based education will require individual attendance verification.*
  3. CPE for qualified in-house training and qualified study groups will require an ASPPA member verify and submit outline and attendance listing to the ASPPA office.* *
*ASPPA proposes reducing current member webcast fee from $195 to $105 with CPE for first registered attendee. Additional attendees at the same firm can also register for the same webcast and obtain CPE for $35 each.

**Classroom style Web-based education is allowed only when the CPE sponsor offers. ASPPA proposes new classroom style webcast offering at $1,000. This would be available for unlimited attendees with CPE offered to everyone viewing provided qualified in-house training and qualified study group reporting requirements are met.

Additional Information

CPE reporting will remain subject to audit and falls under ASPPA’s Code of Professional Conduct.

There is an online CPE reporting form for the 2009/2010 cycle at http://www.asppa.org/2010cpe which will incorporate most ASPPA-sponsored CPE events a member attends automatically. Self reported CPE can easily be entered and stored until the current cycle form is complete and ready to submit. To better assist our members, for the 2011/2012 cycle and beyond, this online CPE reporting form will also track JBEA and ERPA CPE credits earned.
